MISS HAVISHAM
For my concept of Miss Havisham i examined how she was presented
within every interpretation on Great Expectations.
I would describe Miss Havisham is late 30's early 40's while aging within the film, she had very
dark/grey circles around her eyes, dry lips from her home being damp and cold. She wouldn't have very good hygiene while she wore the same dress for so many years.
MH is an independent wealthily women who was left at the alter on her wedding day. Ever since the day of her being 'jilted' on her wedding she has stopped the time on the big clock on the house and her watch as to say she is still living within the time of being jilted at the alter.
Another main point of MH is her wedding dress, it becomes old, dirty, dusty throughout the film just like herself, it become lifeless and less attractive. You understand when Miss Havisham became heartbroken she became a social outcast by never leaving her home.
MH hair deteriorates throughout the film, you first see her with very tight curls which was more of the Georgian era and later on you notice her appearance becomes less attractive, this would indicate MH didn't have a purpose to make an effort anymore especially with Estella her adopted daughter being distant.
MH was an extremely manipulative women who used Estella and Pip as 'puppets' for her own amusement. MH decided to use Estella to break someones heart while turning Estella's into ice.
As well as the film i found myself watching the BBC Episodes of Great Expectations an found myself writing the words such as ghost like and demented.MH was very pale, delicate which gave me a feeling she was ghost like, The way MH spoke gave me the impression she was loopy and not exactly in the same era as the people she was leaving with, this brought me back to her living the memory of her wedding day.
While watching the film the word corpse bride came to mind, she was identical to a corpse in the way moved around the house she was slow, fragile, and stiff.
In the BBC episodes you see MH has twitches and starts to scratch her skin on her hand when distressed or nervous causing this to burn inflicting irritation to the skin making it sore and red.. This back home for me would be called a chicken scratch if that is some relative information.
