MRS LADERMAN - FINAL

For my final of Mrs Laderman i wanted her to look a bit crazy, nuts but still have a glamorous feel!
So for i thought my mum was the perfect candidate!

The following images show my final look... I wanted my mum to sit on a chair and look mischievous, mysterious and a little crazy...

I found my mum perfect for the image as she was exactly too young or two old. Even if she's not as photogenic as i though, she worked well with the look i wanted to create...

Things i used -

  • Natural foundation
  • Beige Lipstick in MUA
  • Primer
  • Back comb
  • Lightly hightlighted and Contoured
  • Light concealer under the eyes
  • Mascara

In future references i would like to explore my creativity more and go with my instincts for my design.

CLAUDIA - FINAL

The above image contains my final image of Claudia, She is is seen to look evil and psychotic when in fact she designed by her Neighbor Mrs Laderman.

Things i needed:
  • Foundation
  • Brushes
  • Cotton Wool Pads
  • Eyelashes

Step by step appliance -
  1. Prepare the face with primer.
  2. Apply Foundation
I wanted to create a look which didn't look like the average 20 year old. Claudia was a scarred child and wanted to be loved, she was manipulated by Mrs Laderman thinking she was nuts, this Photos shows her with no eye and crying black tears from the other. I found this look would be ideal for my chosen TV Series; American Horror Story.
I found this look extremely hard and didn't plan much into it, it has taught me that i should always practice before i dive straight in, but i am proud of the outcome of the look i found it fits perfect for my characters description. I wanted her to wear Black to show she was surrounded by darkness.

The design was more complicated that i thought, next time blocking an eye out i will use something other than a cotton wool pad, i found the pad didn't make the effect i wanted it to make in the first place. First practice all went well but as i found myself more nervous second time round it showed in my performance. I find i need to have more confidence in myself to be able to expand my creativity.

IDEA ONE -

Before i changed my idea -

My original idea was based in American Horror Story, Claudia was Psychotic whom eventually stabbed herself in the eye to get attention of her imaginary boyfriend Quentin. Quentin only loved her when she was hurt so she decided to keep him captive in her basement. This basement is not where you'd like to be captive where many former owners of the house live here all of which had been murder. Claudia can see all the former male of the house but not the women. She thinks the males are Quentin changing his appearance to suit her mood, she finds herself seducing the men but blurs out each time due to the womb of her eye making her black out. The house is playing with her mind leading her to think she is crazy.
Mrs Laderman, knows everything about the previous life of the house and knows what the house is doing but is she actually behind the whole thing? is she the one creating the whole erriness?

DEVELOPMENT - QUENTIN / MRS LADERMEN

Quentin will be dead for the look i am creating, she has awoken Quentins Doppelgänger thinking it was Quentin.

Things i will need;
  • Pale Foundation
  • Brushes
  • Hair Slick back
  • Blood
  • Black
I hope to achieve a dead vampire look throughout my best ability of watching Vampire Diaries and for it to look realistic.

or

Mrs Ladermen is classy women living next door to claudia. She has a big influence of Claudia and you can understand she is the one who has designs on Claudia and Quentin. She is very manipulative, keeping Claudia Captive within her own home persuading her she is afraid to go outside.

DEVELOPMENT - CLAUDIA

CLAUDIA. -

Claudia dark long locks, pretty and will attract anything she walks past. - Claudia being agoraphobic finds herself with not many friends, but this will eventually subside when she becomes close to a young group of friends who are trying to protect her.
Claudia will have hair extremely straight and will look innocent but attractive.
Her make up will be extremely bold as i want her look to be when she has recently turned and going through the flashback stage and killing spree.  She is wanting help with switching her humanity back on.

The things i will need:

  • foundation.
  • Eyelashes.
  • Brushes.
  • Dark Eyes - eyeshadow
  • Dark Lips - blood.
  • eyepatch
  • Fork.

VAMPIRE DIARIES or AMERICAN HORROR STORY.

Vampire Diaries is my scenerio for my characters.. I have recently finished watching all the vampire diaries and found i could incorporate my characters within the storyline. Claudia is a great definition of Elena and Quentin as Silas. Elena previous lost both parents, as which as claudia has done, but had fallen for Stefan Silas Doppelgänger, Even though she never previously killed him? we don't exactly know if Claudia could be Elena doppel consider the doppelgängers are destined to be together. Claudia has had past history with Quentin but has awoken the wrong guy which happened to be Silas. She tells herself it is Quentin, but she will eventually find out he's not who he's claiming to be, but does she manage to fight him back with the help of Mrs Ladermen.

American Horror story was a great thing scenerio for an idea within the basement, I found if i used the maid as a look alike for my Claudia, i could use any of the males with in the scenes to be my Quentin. Quentin is in love with her and would do anything for her to love him back, But she can't see her loves her unless she is hurting. Mrs Ladermen is really creating Claudia's personality and has a big influence on her life, She is something and thinks dearly of her looks, even though she was burnt in a house fire along with the death of Claudia's parents. Who was the one who put the house on fire? Did Mrs laderman just want a daughter of her own?

QUENTIN/ MRS LADERMEN - AWAKENING/ BLUE COAT

Awakening is my chosen word for Quentin considering Claudia killed Quentin but awoke Quentin's Doppelgänger.
Quentin's doppelganger knows he has a mortal doppelganger but doesn't know exactly what has happened to him that put Claudia in Danger. Claudia is a very attractive girl who is falling for Quentin's Doppelgänger but was it the right move to awaken Doppelgänger?

AHS- BLUE COAT

What do you always see Mrs Laderman wearing? that pacific blue coat? When does she wear it? When trouble is around the corner.

CLAUDIA - SAVE US. - FORK

KEY WORDS

SAVE US. - VAMPIRE DIARIES

Claudia finds her self in need of help after discovering the past of her former boyfriend, she is developing the crave to feed on everyone including people she once cared about. Claudia's neighbor Mrs Ladermen is her only hope for help, but she is not only causing more agro it turns out she is the cause of her parents death.

Mrs Ladermen is a Original Vampire which was close to Claudia's Parents but one night went terribly wrong, Mrs Ladermen switched of her humanity switch and killed both parents, Eventually she realised she did wrong and took on Claudia, but was determined Claudia would never found out what she did so began to make Claudia go insane influencing her to build a unhealthy relationship with something which would make her go psychotic.

AHS- FORK

Claudia wants saving from her crazy imagination thinking she should hurt her self for Quentin's love. Claudia Eventually Stabs herself in the eye not only hoping Quentin will love her, but hoping that the images of past history will go to.

CLAUDIA AND QUENTIN - INTRODUCTION MY INTERPRETATION

The two Characters i have chosen to create are Claudia and Quentin

Claudia

Claudia is a girl in her twenties, She has recently lost both parents in a fatal accident which has no explanation behind it apart from a animal attack.

All the scenes take Place in the woods where her parents were found. Claudia is seen to be Agoraphobic and is kept in touch with the outside world by her neighbors who provide her with her everyday requirements. The twist is Claudia is not agoraphobic but sees her self only going out at night after she believes her parents were killed by vampires who can't be exposed to light without a daylight ring.
During the scenes Claudia goes hunting for her parents killer at night but awakens the wrong person who eventually turns her. While Claudia goes through the horrible stages of hunger she has various flashbacks of her past life remembering she once loves but tortured her former boyfriend Quentin.
Claudia Attracts ever male near her while she is a vampire, she is unbelievably attractive but finds herself needing help.

Quentin
Claudia's Killer was in fact her former imaginary boyfriends doppelgänger, Claudia built a unhealthy relationships with horror films in the beginning of her parents death recreating a relationship to feel loved she found herself attracting one image of a male called Quentin, Quentin is not in fact imaginary but he is lead to be a big disappointment to her, She eventually kills him. While on the discovery of her parents killer she found a body whom looked exactly alike Quentin was it the best of moves to awaken Quentin's Doppelgänger.
From reading my interpretation of Claudia and Quentin i'm sure you know i'm recreating my look from Vampire Diaries.

AMHS
Claudia is a girl of mid twenties, she has recently lost both parents. Her only Adult figure is Mrs Laderman, Claudia is missing an eye from previous experiences with her imaginary boyfriend. Due to past history Claudia does not come out of her home and is surrounded by darkiness.
The Scenes are from when claudia built a unhealthy relationship with horror films inflict pain upon herself.

Mrs Ladermen is her next door neighbor she has designed Claudia, She has a huge impact on the young girls life, she manipulates Claudia to thinking she isn't normal an encourages to stay in the house, the lack of communication and friends forcing Claudia to create a boyfriend with her imaginary, but that soon becomes her worst nightmare when Mrs Ladermans begings to tell Claudia, Quentin doesn't love her and only loves her when she is hurt.

CLAUDIA QUENTIN AND MRS LADERMAN - INTRODUCTION.

Claudia

Claudia is a girl in her twenties. As a child she was left alone to develop with little parental guidance and through her relationship with T.V. movies developed an unhealthy relationship with Horror films, believing this to be the way life really is.
All the scenes take place in various parts of Claudia’s apartment, which is European in style with
a great deal of kitsch décor. She is agoraphobic and is kept in touch with the outside world by her neighbours who provide her with her every day requirements.  She models herself on a variety of girls often twisting her look to suit whichever film she is watching at the time and there is often a nod to the main character in the current film within her appearance.
The script portrays her as psychotic and there is always the feeling that although her character is scripted/can be seen as humorous, danger is just around the corner.   However all this is normal to Claudia and she is of a cheerful disposition in this mad world of hers.

Quentin
Claudia has an imaginary boyfriend, Quentin, who is long suffering and a constant disappointment to her. They don’t live together but he visits regularly and they talk on the telephone if he can’t get in to see her. As he is part of her imagination his appearance changes to suit her mood. Sometimes he will be a David Beckham looking guy, whilst in another scene he will appear as a Pete Docherty type, Daniel Craig type or a Hollyoaks Babe. If she is having a bad day he will morph into an uncouth couch potato chav with all that brings with it.
He is as into the horror film genre as she and into role-playing to suit her whims and moods.
Claudia has a paranoid suspicion that he is constantly having affairs behind her back and keeps him firmly under her thumb, sometimes restraining him or keeping him prisoner in one of the rooms.

Mrs Laderman
Claudia’s neighbour in her 40’s. She alternately changes into a variety alter egos and is Claudia’s friend and confidant. Living in the apartment opposite, she was Claudia’s only link to the outside world. Although they are friends there is suspicion that Mrs L’, has designs on Quentin. In fact she has designs on Claudia.

EVALUATION - GREAT EXPECTATIONS

Great Expectation wasn't the most interesting topic i liked, i found in this semester we had a lot of work do in a short time and i found myself lacking behind a lot. I changed myself such with idea;s and could explore to my full extent, even though this semester i found myself pushing myself more but would fall at the first hurdle, This will help me next year to always keep track of everything we do each time. I need to explore my idea's more and step outside my confident zone. This will help me feel confident and learn different skills even if the first time wasn't as successful as it could of been.

ART OF GOTHIC-

THE GOTHIC - GREAT EXPECTATIONS.

The Gothic

Often referred to a genre of literature that reflected on romance and horror. The first use of the word of 'Gothic' was used in a novel 'A Gothic story of The Castle of Otranto' which was published in 1764 by Horace Walpole. The gothic contained stories of fascinating but terrifying experienced featuring in places such as an Ancient Castle,Dungeons, Graveyards, Secret Passageways. Some of the scenes contained screams, Ghosts, blood an more.

Not only was The Gothic associated with romance and horror stories, it was also associated with Architecture which was first seen in 1140 in France. This style included pointed arches, ribbed vault and flying buttress, this soon became stylish/fashionable in England and later seen in Canterbury Cathedral and Westminster Abby.
The Gothic was later used as victorian Literature by novels written by Dickens, and The Brontes, this later became popular in films and TV programmes we see in todays Era. Dickens (Charles Dickens) was Fascinated by the Gothic and Incorporated in his novels, Such as Great Expectations.

• How is the Gothic depicted in Great Expectations?

There is a different use of the Gothic later in the book, when Magwitch returns and reveals to the horrified Pip that he is his benefactor. Pip writes:

"The imaginary student pursued by the misshapen creature he had impiously made, was not more wretched than I, pursued by the creature who had made me, and recoiling from him with a stronger repulsion, the more he admired me and the fonder he was of me. (ch. 40) -"

Aspects such as; Sexual Power, Versus Horror, Strange Places, Clashing time Periods, Power and Constraint, a Word of doubt of The Gothic was portrayed in Great Expectations example being the grave yard at the begining of the novel, the forge, Pips lodgings, Jagger's office, St. Paul's Cathedral, Newgate Prison and hummums.

• What are specific elements of the uncanny?

In Great Expectations Miss Havisham can be seen as uncanny because she is described as a 'waxwork' ghostly and corspe a like. Dickens Created a sense of fear for the character being strange and unfamiliar.
The environment has a big hold of fear and terror within the novel This is seen when Pip goes to Satis House and visits Miss Havisham for the first time.

dressed in rich materials -- satins, and lace, and silks -- all of white. Her shoes were white. And she had a long white veil dependent from her hair, and she had bridal flowers in her hair, but her hair was white. Some bright jewels sparkled on her neck and on her hands, and some other jewels lay sparkling on the table. Dresses, less splendid than the dress she wore, and half-packed trunks, were scattered about ... I saw that everything within my view which ought to be white, had been white long ago, and had lost its lustre, and was faded and yellow. I saw that the bride within the bridal dress had withered like the dress, and like the flowers, and had no brightness left but the brightness of her sunken eyes ... Once, I had been taken to see some ghastly waxwork at the Fair, representing I know not what impossible personage lying in state. Once, I had been taken to one of our old marsh churches to see a skeleton in the ashes of a rich dress that had been dug out of vault under the church pavement. Now, waxwork and skeleton seemed to have dark eyes that moved and looked at me. I should have cried out, if could. (ch. 8)

DEATH MASKS 2.

Death Mask practical.
I enjoyed this practical due to the damn reason we got let loose with 3 colours, black white and grey.
First we was told to take a photo in the dark and copy the image through its darkness' and lightness' on the photo.
You'll see a selection of images of my death mask interpretation.

This gave me confidence analysis a image more and understand detail within the image.
This will help me for ideas in the future for creation of characters or designs.

I found this exercise interesting experimenting with shading on the face.

Each image shows how much detail the molds pick up of the persons face especially the last one which show Johns scars.

HIGH DEFINITION BROADCASTING

What is High definition broadcasting and how does it affect make up and hair artists?

High definition is a high degree of detail in an image or screen as shown below.

Make-up and hair artist are affected by High definition broadcasting from how detailed the image comes across, too much make-up can appear obvious in HD. Artists need to picture their model as canvas, the better you prepare your canvas; Cleansing, toning and moisturising the better the make up will look. The slight wrong detail within the make-up or hair will show in high definition so everything needs to be spot on.
Specialised cosmetics and equipment is believed to be the only thing you can use for high definition, this is simply not true. As long as you work to film standard your cosmetics in your kit are fine.
Although some Artists employ a airbrush techniques, this gives you a more soft light complexion and doesn't show up in as much as heavy make up in high definition.

"Too much makeup can appear really obvious on HD." – John Woodbridge

One product which is a disadvantage within HD is setting powder, although naked to the eye, it can give the face a ashy dull look through a camera eye. You can buy specialised HD setting powders in both forms loose and pressed.
Make up artists are used to looking at the final look through the mirror, as the general rule 'what the mirror sees, the camera sees' but just as film HD you need to eye ball the make-up whatever become apparent to eye, will become apparent to high definition.

CONTINUITY

What is continuity?
The maintenance of continuous action and self-consistent detail in the various scenes of a film or broadcast.
Why do i need to know this? The reason a artist needs to full understand what continuity means is to know she/he is do their job right, Before i searched continuity i didn't know exactly what it meant nor did i know why i needed to know about it.
In my future career i will be experiencing a lot of continuity working on films, TV sets etc...
Continuity is extremely important in the film and tv making, purely because you need the shots to be exactly the same as the first, such as hair position, clothes, make up; skin tone, lipstick.
Typical issues with continuity is running out of the product you have used or even lost that; but a professional will always make sure she has a alternative. You should always write down what you have used previous, this is why face charts are important.
Learning continuity now will help in the future to build confidence to create the exact same look i have done previous, the purpose for this will be sometime the actor will have a hand model, a stunt model, a back view model and you need every single one to be the exact same.

ESTELLA

Estella is a young orphan like protagonist Pip but unlike him whom was raised by his sister wife of blacksmith Joe Gargery, Estella was raised and adopted by wealthy Miss Havisham to become a lady. Estella is a very manipulative attracted women, who comes across very abrupt due from the upbringing of Miss Havisham.
Miss Havisham raised Estella for her revenge of being jilted at the alter, MH used Estella to torment men and break their hearts. Estella had her ability ti express her emotion and interact normally within the world. Estella eventually marries the cruel nobleman Drummle instead of marrying kindhearted commoner Pip. Drummle treats Estella harshly and makes her life miserable for many years. Dickens has used Estellas life to reinforce the idea that one's happiness and well-being are not deeply connected to one's social position: had Estella been poor, she might have been better off.

FACE CHARTS

\\

Here are a few face charts i have created for the Miss Havisham look for my final assessment, throughout the next post i will expand my idea into my final design in preparation for my final assessment.

VICTORIAN HAIR

Victorian hair in the (1830s-1840s) consisted of topknots also known as the Apollo knot which became higher and less wider than the previous decade. These came with flat loops and bows of hair sometimes intertwined with braids, flowers, leaves, pearls, and feathers etc. The hair was still brushed back flat and sleek an was almost invariably parted in the centre.
The decorative curls fall firmly over the sides, covering part or all of the ear, this become almost as prominent as the topknot itself.
Later on the general style established in the end of the previous decade still continued with minor modifications. The hair was flat and sleek on top with the same variety partings for the last decade.
The bun was sometimes, as high as the crown but usually lower. The decorative curls were still important on the side of the head but frequently the curls become braids, which were dressed in curious long loops, exposing the ears.
